Catfish Poem #2
Toes there were and also feet
planted firmly on the ground
since the day she learned how to walk.
(Balance was difficult at first –
even for a giant – even sometimes
giants have di.fi.cul.ties.)
Toes there were but never shoes
(I never found out why there were never shoes.)
But that’s my fault – I never asked.
I suppose, for a giant – there aren’t rules
you can just choose not to wear shoes.
And she stood with a basketful of fish.
The only words she ever spoke were this:
“All I ever wanted was a pretty dress.”
Yes, a basketful of fish.
It’s all she ever wished.
I agree, it doesn’t make sense.
